Keep Them Safe

Pet Safety Tips

Florida Heat Safety

  • Walk dogs before 9 AM or after 7 PM during summer months
  • Check pavement with your hand — if it burns you, it burns paws
  • Always carry fresh water and a collapsible bowl
  • Never leave pets in a parked car, even with windows cracked
  • Know the signs of heatstroke: excessive panting, drooling, lethargy

Hydration & Nutrition

  • Dogs need about 1 oz of water per pound of body weight daily
  • Refresh water bowls at least twice a day in warm weather
  • Feed on a consistent schedule to support digestion and behavior
  • Avoid feeding right before or after vigorous exercise
  • Consult your vet before switching food brands or formulas

Foods to Avoid

  • Grapes & raisins — can cause kidney failure
  • Chocolate, coffee & caffeine — toxic to the nervous system
  • Onions, garlic & chives — damage red blood cells
  • Xylitol (artificial sweetener) — found in gum, peanut butter, candy
  • Macadamia nuts, avocado, and raw yeast dough

Everyday Safety

  • Keep ID tags and microchip info current at all times
  • Use a properly fitted collar or harness — not too loose or tight
  • Secure trash cans and cleaning products out of reach
  • Check your yard for gaps in fencing before letting dogs roam
  • Keep toxic plants (sago palm, oleander, azalea) out of reach
